Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi made a big announcement on Sunday and said that the party will fight the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections alone. Ruling out the possibility of any alliance with the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party, he said the Congress would field its candidates in all 403 seats in the state and win on its own. Priyanka said that during every crisis including the covid epidemic, only Congress workers have come forward to help the people.
Party will field Congress workers on all seats: Priyanka
Addressing a ‘Pratigya Sammelan’ in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr, Priyanka said, “We will field only Congress workers in all the assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. If Congress has to win, it will win on its own.” Congress office-bearers from 14 districts of western Uttar Pradesh, including Agra, Aligarh, Hathras and Bulandshahr attended the conference and most of them requested Priyanka not to ally with any party.
During the conference, Priyanka also congratulated the party workers for strengthening the organization in the state. She said, “I want to congratulate all the workers for strengthening the organization in Uttar Pradesh. Today is the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru… He has written about the slogan ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ in his book. India Mata ki jai means hail for farmers, hail for soldiers, hail for labourers, hail for women.”
In her address, Priyanka also targeted the BJP. She said, “All freedom fighters knew the importance of freedom. They knew the value of freedom which means constitutional freedom, economic freedom and the rule of democracy. But when I came to Uttar Pradesh, I felt that the BJP does not understand the meaning of freedom. It is clear that those who do not fight for freedom cannot respect freedom.”
Elections to be held in Uttar Pradesh next year
Assembly elections are due in the politically very important Uttar Pradesh next year. According to the trends so far, the main contest in these elections is seen between Yogi Adityanath-led BJP and Akhilesh Yadav-led SP. However, it would also be a mistake to dismiss former Chief Minister Mayawati and her party BSP. The Congress is not being considered in the main race, although it can spoil the game of either the BJP or the opposition by performing better.
